Both CNC machining and sheet metal fabrication are highly effective methods, but there are times when one has an advantage over the other.
On one hand, sheet metal fabrication is ideal for creating lightweight enclosures, brackets, panels and parts quickly while being cost-effective. CNC machining, on the other hand, shines when precision, complexity and material thickness become critical factors.

If you need a part to be incredibly accurate, CNC machining is usually the way to go.
CNC machines can hold extremely tight tolerances repeatedly across multiple parts, making them perfect for any job where accuracy is absolutely critical – which is really important for aerospace.
Now, sheet metal fabrication can be pretty precise too, but processes like bending, welding and assembly, can create slight differences from one part to the next.
Let’s say you’re making a component that needs perfectly placed cutouts for bearings. With CNC machining, you get the consistency you need to make sure everything fits and functions exactly as it should.
Sheet metal fabrication is great for parts you can make by bending or forming flat material. But what happens when your designs get more three-dimensional, or they have complicated internal features? That’s where CNC machining shines.
With machining, you can create things like deep pockets, recessed features and even organic shapes or internal cavities. These are features that are just super difficult, or even impossible, to create with bending and forming alone.
Think about a custom heat sink with all those intricate channels for airflow, or a housing that has specific compartments inside it. CNC machining can produce these complex shapes accurately, right from a solid block of material.
Sheet metal fabrication is great for thinner metals. But once you start getting into thicker material, machining often makes a lot more sense.
We’re talking about things like thick aluminum plates, heavy-duty steel brackets, or structural mounting systems.
Bending very thick material consistently is possible but often difficult. It might need an excessive amount of force or special tools. Machining just gets around all that by carving the part directly from a solid block.

Sometimes, products just need to look good. They need that high-end, refined finish. CNC machining is usually the go-to for this because it can create those perfectly smooth surfaces, crisp sharp edges, with detailed engravings.
Now, you can make sheet metal parts look great too, especially when you add powder coating, anodizing or a bare metal finish. But for that ultra-fine detail and perfectly controlled surface, CNC machining has the edge – no pun intended.
This is a big deal in industries where the look and feel of the product are a huge part of its value.
When a design just can’t be made by bending and cutting metal sheets, you’ll have no choice but to go with CNC machining. This is especially true if your parts need things like deep threaded holes, precision bores, undercuts, complex curves, or internal channels.
CNC machining really opens up possibilities for complex parts that would otherwise need to be pieced together from multiple components.
Sheet metal fabrication is a fantastic option for a lot of things, especially enclosures and structural parts where you need to be fast and keep costs down. But when you need that extra precision, complexity, or special features, CNC machining is usually the way to go.
